broken feet and necessary reminders.

it’s safe to say the last month was a little different than expected.

on august 2, i was leaving my home to head to work, mistook a step, and fell. and it wasn’t just any fall, but a fall bad enough to break my right foot in a manner that will require 12-16 weeks to fully heal. (translation, i’ll be in a boot or shoe until the end of november.)

so for the last month, i’ve more or less been homebound. i’m working from home, since i can’t drive. for the first two weeks, i was on crutches and putting no weight on my foot at all. and even still, my ability to walk far is quite limited, so a good chunk of my time has been spent on our couch.

it’s humbling, breaking your foot. while on crutches, i could do hardly anything on my own, as it’s quite difficult to so much as carry something without the use of both hands. i’ve been completely reliant upon my husband or other people to get me anywhere, and for the first couple of weeks, my husband had to shoulder the burden of basically everything in the home — laundry, cleaning, cooking, all of it.

i’m so grateful that i’m able to walk a bit now, but those first few weeks were an important reminder to me of two things.

1) i don’t have control over my life.

as much as we might like to think it, the truth is, we really don’t have control over our lives. that responsibility and honor belongs to God and God alone. the control we seem to have over small things can trick us into thinking we have control over all it, but He’s the one who’s really managing it all.

2) productivity does not define my worth.

this is a lesson i’ve learned a hundred different times in a hundred different ways, and clearly i need to keep being reminded of it. the first couple weeks of this month were really hard for me because i felt completely useless. i couldn’t do anything around the house. heck, i could barely carry my water bottle or ice my foot by myself.

my sweet, patient husband reminded me many times during those weeks that while he does appreciate when i’m able to do share the load in our home, that doesn’t ultimately matter. it doesn’t change my worth or how much he loves me. it’s so true, but it’s far too easy for me to forget.

you may need this reminder today too, friend, so don’t forget: your productivity does not define your worth.

📚 currently reading

the little french bistro by nina george
i’m still working my way through this one. like the little paris bookshop, it’s a coming-of-age story delayed, but a quite different one. while my progress is slow, i am enjoying it.

the invention of murder by judith flanders
my younger sister and i are rather big crime buffs. we love mystery novels and shows, so naturally i was super intrigued when she mentioned this book. it’s a pretty hefty one, so i’m working my way through it slowly, but it’s absolutely fascinating so far!

on becoming babywise by robert bucknam
at the recommendation of a few people, i picked this one up from the library because my husband and i are expecting our first little one in january and you better believe i want to get that kiddo on a good sleep schedule as soon as possible!

p.s. if you follow me on instagram, things have been pretty quiet lately, as i took a break for the whole month of august. but keep an eye out soon for a fun bookish related announcement!

💕 recent delights

we’re focusing on one delight specifically today, friend, and that’s because today is one of my favorite days of the whole year… simplified fall launch day!

if you’ve followed me for any length of time since 2014, there’s an extremely good chance you’ve heard me talk about the simplified planner from emily ley. 2022 will be my eighth year using the simplified planner and, in what will come as a shock to many, i’m switching to the weekly simplified planner this year!

if you’ve considered joining the simplified sisterhood before, today is a great day to do it! not only have the 2022 calendar year planners launched, but there’s several new products to check out as well!

i’ve chosen the happy stripe weekly planner for 2022, and will also be picking up the new happy stripe color coding dots and flags. plus, after great deliberation, i’ll also be adding the home base binder to my home organization arsenal!

if you’re shopping simplified today, i’d love to hear what you pick up!

hopefully your august didn’t look quite like mine, but as we step into september, with all its beautiful promise of fall, i hope you are looking forward to wonderful things to come. and don’t forget (as i won’t any time soon)… your worth is not in what you do.

so rest in that today, and maybe choose to actually rest as result.

until next time!
